From Survival to Thrival...

The Holiday Edition

Let’s clear something up right away.

Thrival is not technically a word.
I checked.
So I claimed it.

Because thriving didn’t describe where I was, and survival felt too generous. Thrival lives in the space between who you were when you were barely hanging on and who you become when you finally choose yourself.

Two years ago, the holidays didn’t feel busy.
They felt hollow.

On paper, I looked high-functioning. I was performing like a champion at work. Showing up. Delivering. Holding it together. From the outside, nothing looked wrong.

But my off time told a different story.

When the workday ended, so did my capacity. I retreated. I isolated. I avoided anything that required emotional presence. I wasn’t my best self. I wasn’t even close. I was emotionally and spiritually bankrupt, running on fumes I didn’t know how to replenish.

I was also in a relationship I didn’t truly have the capacity for at the time.

He was wonderful. Kind. Present. Supportive. And I had very little to give. Not because I didn’t care, but because I was struggling to stay afloat myself. I showed up the best I could, but my best was limited. I didn’t have the emotional bandwidth to fully receive love, let alone reciprocate it in the way it deserved.

That realization was heavy.

The holidays amplified it all. The disconnect. The guilt. The quiet knowing that I was surviving, not living. I wasn’t overwhelmed by too much activity. I was weighed down by what I couldn’t access within myself.

I wasn’t lazy.
I wasn’t ungrateful.
I was surviving in silence.

Back then, I avoided stillness because it was loud. Being alone with my thoughts felt unsafe. I numbed, minimized, and disappeared from my own life. I told myself I just needed more time, more healing, more distance. But what I really needed was honesty and reconnection.

Fast forward to now, and I’m living in what I lovingly call my Thrival Era.

Not because life is perfect.
Not because everything suddenly sparkles.
But because I am present, grounded, and emotionally available to my own life again.

The difference is not my schedule.
The difference is my inner world.

Thrival is not about doing more. It’s about coming back to yourself. It’s about having the capacity to feel, connect, and engage without abandoning yourself in the process.

How Thrival Found Me

This shift didn’t come from pushing harder or forcing joy. It came from radical honesty, self-compassion, and a willingness to rebuild from the inside out.

Here’s what moved me from survival into thrival.

1. I stopped pretending I was fine

High performance can hide deep depletion. I allowed myself to admit that functioning wasn’t the same as flourishing. That truth became the doorway to healing.

Thrival truth: Awareness is the beginning of freedom.

2. I rebuilt my emotional and spiritual reserves

I had been giving from an empty well. I returned to prayer, reflection, embodiment, and practices that restored meaning and connection.

Thrival truth: You cannot sustain love or presence without replenishment.

3. I learned to honor capacity without shame

I stopped forcing myself to be more available than I was able to be. Capacity became something I respected, not something I judged.

Thrival truth: Limits are information, not failure.

4. I allowed connection to return slowly and honestly

I didn’t rush healing or relationships. I focused on safety, truth, and alignment. That changed how I show up for myself and others.

Thrival truth: Authentic connection starts with self-trust.

5. I redefined what “being okay” actually means

Being okay is not just showing up at work and getting through the day. It’s having the emotional space to enjoy your life, your relationships, and yourself.

Thrival truth: You deserve a life you can actually feel.

Survival vs Thrival

Survival performs.
Thrival participates.

Survival disconnects.
Thrival engages.

Survival gives what it can from empty reserves.
Thrival gives from wholeness.

If the holidays feel quiet in a heavy way, if you’re functioning but not fulfilled, you are not failing. You may simply be in a season that’s asking for honesty, gentleness, and support.

And yes, I made up thrival.
But it was born from lived experience.
